I have begun reading a book I read a couple of years ago upon its release: Brené Brown's Braving The Wilderness.
For multiple reasons I have found it helpful, insightful, and necessarily discomforting in order to prompt change within myself in a variety of areas.
One of the components of the acronym she teaches regarding what trust truly is is what the "N" in BRAVING stands for: Nonjudgment. "I can ask for what I need, and you can ask for what you need. We can talk about how we feel without judgment." In other words, it is important in a relationship with trust to be able to ask for help and know that the receiver of the inquiry is not going to hold your inability to do something over your head as a weakness or lacking. In fact, the
person should see the inquiry as a strength of the person to want to grow, learn and strive forward toward their best self. Not knowing is okay. Acknowledging and seeking out the knowledge we are missing is the to key positive development within ourselves and our world.
In our everyday lives we have likely figured out how to make our days work, but in so doing if we are present and aware and continuing to learn and explore, we will come across ways or ideas that we want to incorporate into our lives to improve the quality. Sometimes we can do all that is needed on our own, and sometimes we just cannot. From physical tasks such as knowing how to change the decor or the structure of our homes to the emotional improvements we seek such as
understanding how our psychology and sociology plays a role in our innate responses with others and our own mind when confronted with scenarios we do not know how to best navigate, seeking out help from those we can trust and who are experts in said fields is a wise choice.
Our responsibility as the seeker of assistance is to apply what we learn as we move forward in our life journey and extend gratitude for the help that was given. As well, just as important as it is for the helper to not see us as less than, we too must not see ourselves as less than for asking, for not knowing.
As many of us are choosing to explore our country's history with systematic racism and inequality more deeply and more broadly as a population than ever in recent memory, we are looking to those who know far more than we do. In this week's Monday Motivational post which received worth-reading comments from TSLL readers, the idea of becoming more comfortable with
not knowing and forever choosing to be a student of life with an open mind to see and explore all that we do not know yet is shared as a way to move forward positively, collectively and civilly.
Not knowing is okay. Asking for help from those who know what we seek to understand is okay. In fact, it is a courageous act as Brené Brown writes. It is an act of vulnerability. It is a vital component to living a more fulfilling and compassion life.
Whether we are seeking to build trust in an intimate romantic relationship or with acquaintances at work, our community or in our neighborhood, when someone says they do not know and asks you for help about something you do know, see the courage in the asking and share what you know or recommend someone who does. With less judgment and more seeking of knowledge and understanding, the growth we seek will gradually and in great fortitude begin to
emerge.
Something else that emerged this week was the need for my cherry trees to be harvested.
In what happened in about 10 days’ time, the cherries began to turn slightly red, and then all of a sudden they were brilliant red, and then by Wednesday evening, they were deep red and in need of picking.
I obliged their demand and turned the bowl of cherries you see here into a Cherry Clafoutis (use this recipe and substitute the pear liqueur for Kirsch or Cognac). Paired with hot tea, Thursday evening and most likely this evening was and will be
scrumptious.
And now to the newsletter. With two weeks’ worth of post to catch up on, you are in for a feast with a post for Francophiles, a post for those looking for summer style inspiration, decor inspiration, life and living inspiration and a tour of my Mother's peony garden. AND two This & That’s full of books, articles, sales, clothing, gardening and decor items and much
more.
Before I wrap up, while tootling about my Mother's garden this past weekend (they live about seven hours away from Bend), the hummingbirds were feasting, and I happened to be standing not three feet away from the feeder under the cherry tree. I first realized a hummingbird was near, as my back was to the feeder and I was attempting to take pictures, when I heard a hummmmmmm sound buzzing behind my head. I slowly turned around and the hummingbird paused, but
then continued to keep eating. Having my phone and camera handy, I recorded to the best of my ability this lovely bird for about a minute in slow motion enjoying its dinner. I have provided the video below. You can either view it in the newsletter or click on the link at the top and be redirected to YouTube to be dazzled by the speed at which their wings fly even when captured in slow motion.
And now to the newsletter! Thank you as always for choosing to subscribe. I do hope you enjoy this week's issue, and until July 31st, I will see you on the blog.
