Setting boundaries is not always easy to do. And during the holidays, it can be even more difficult to set boundaries or to know where our boundaries should be as we are sometimes tugged and pulled by family or relationships we are a part of but wish to step away to build our own traditions or attempt to enjoy the holidays in a way that sits better
with our desire for a memorable holiday season.
I have found that boundary setting becomes easier with practice, not unlike any other skill we choose to acquire and welcome into our lives. But what is also easier is setting boundaries with positive reinforcement. For those we want to continue to have relationships with and those who want to build or strengthen relationships
with us, often the reason the boundary has not been respected is simply due to ignorance of knowing what is expected and what it looks like in practice. When we applaud what we appreciate, when we bring attention to what we do want when it happens, even if by chance, we create moments of aha for others involved in our most intimate daily lives.
However, at the beginning of practicing boundary setting is knowing what boundary we want to set. Sometimes this knowledge takes time to acquire, and often more difficult to understand is why we wish to set certain boundaries, initially. But even if we do not know why precisely at first, so long as we respect what we need and
what feels comfortable to us in order for us to live well and with contentment, we have every right to set firmly the boundary that will enable both to be experienced.
A couple of years ago, episode #126 detailed the benefit of boundaries and how to set them even if, and especially if, others do not want to respect them. Learning this skill is a game changer for the quality of life you are and will be living moving
forward. Whether it is during the holidays or any other month of the year, may you honor your self-respect to cultivate a life you love living and sharing with those you love.
