When we hear "yes" too often, the moment we eventually run into a "no" it can be jarring, shocking and we may initially react poorly rather than respond well.
Whether it is becoming accustomed to receiving our online shopping at a swift pace, receiving instant responses via email or our social media or seeing our money transfer immediately from one online account to another, we are certainly living in a world that is conditioning us to expect instanteous responses to our wants and sometimes our needs.
And while such capabilities are awesome for a variety of reasons, when we don't consciously pay attention to what such availablity is doing to our expectations in life and to the models that allow such ease to happen (the express shipping services while nice, for example, are often not eco-friendly as more trucks are on the road ensuring you receive that package in one or two days' time), we can sometimes find ourselves not living thoughtfully. In other words, we may be acting without
consideration, making spending or social decisions that we may not actually want to do after a day's contemplation.
I too have found the waiting for anything I greatly desire to be "difficult", but then I do my best to shake myself and remind myself how fortunate I am to even have the money to afford that particular book, or have a smartphone. I have been shaking myself more often as of late, and enjoying the slower pace. Perhaps I have been enjoying this slower pace more than I realize because when the pace picks up, as school began with the new year, I was jarred a bit.
Each day I have been coming home, crossing the threshold and just melting. Melting and hoping more hours could be in my day to just slow down and savor the home and life I feel fortunate to live.
Interestingly enough, I believe the desire to go more slowly is because with each passing year, I love the life that I have cultivated and that is unfolding, and I just want to savor it. Sometimes we rush because we have to, but sometimes we rush because where we are in our lives is unsettling. As we have discussed many times on the blog, there are lessons along every part of our journey, and slowing down no matter where we are can often ease what we are unsettled about.
As as far as becoming conditioned to expecting whatever we want or ask for it to materialize in a most unfathomably quick pace, why not check in to see why we think we need such a quick pace of life? What is the rush? After all, it is when we are flying down the freeway that we miss the exit or the sign that let's us know if we are heading in the right direction.
