ISSUE #366

,

You, each one of us, contain within the answers you seek; however, it requires of us all to look outside of ourselves to gain the tools needed to unearth the knowledge.

The key is to look in the right direction, walk down the right path, and let go of what has led you astray in the past.

Recently, I had just this aha for a matter I have been working through for some time. Upon reflection, I realized I did not have the right resources around me, I had been reaching out in the wrong direction at times and hoping for a different result where there never would be one so long as I was headed in the wrong direction.

A couple of years ago I had been visiting Seattle for a blog project. It was a day trip, arrive in the early morning and return during rush hour. Upon completing the project, I began to make my way from downtown to the airport. As I was hustling along, looking for the train to deliver me to SeaTac, I came upon the train stop I needed to be at. In a moment of flurry (the train was arriving! Hurry make a decision!) I thought the # was the one I needed. I hopped on and quickly realized I was headed in an entirely different direction than that of the airport. With each rotation of the wheel (yep, that train, turned into a bus - I'll let my Seattle readers explain that one), I was furthering the distance from my desired goal.

The lesson regarding life and the advice we seek out to improve our lives is, if we seek out the wrong source, if we seek out expertise that is far from that (but we could hardly know because we are the neophyte), the only way to head in the right direction is to get off the wrong bus and find the right bus. Which is exactly what I did. Actually, I got off the wrong bus, called a taxi so that I could have a direct delivery to the airport and in the knick of time (I kid you not, they should have left me) made my flight.

The first step is often the most difficult which is to recognize that you are heading down the wrong path. Such recognition is hard because often we are looking to people who sincerely have our best interests at heart; unfortunately, they may not be the expert of what we seek. The good news about detecting the wrong direction is that it does get easier with each experience because it truly begins with trusting yourself. Let's go back to Seattle. How could I have possibly known I was headed in the wrong direction? I was by myself and I didn't know Seattle all that well (where is the Space Needle - that is easy enough to find, but that was about it). So I did my homework: I noticed nobody else had luggage with them, I also noted we were going east, and I needed to go south, and then I simply asked someone who looked like a local. So again, we have the capabilities to find within us what we seek, we just need the tools others can give so long as they are the experts we seek.

Once you begin to find the right direction, the right experts, secure individuals, you will notice the quality of your life heighten to what you had hoped and perhaps beyond. Continue seeking them out until you find them. And when you find them, it will feel like sliding into the a seat that was made especially for you, much like Goldilocks, just right. I have held with me the maxim, "As long as one keeps searching, the answers come." The folk singer Joan Baez is credited with coining it, but it is true. Don't stop. It's as simple as that, and eventually, the answers you seek, the answers you need to open up the world that you know is possible will come.

I want to take a moment to thank you for a beyond successful TSLL French Week. The second annual event exceeded even my expectations and I cannot wait for next year. Since last Friday's newsletter, there were four more posts, and I have included them in today's issue to make sure you don't miss a thing. So again, thank you, for your time, your interest and for letting me know what you enjoy because so much of what was included was inspired by comments and feedback from you.

As newsletter subscribers I wanted to alert you to two dates next week that you may be interested in. I feel fortunate to be invited back to Portland's ABC station, KATU to be a guest on not only one but two of their shows: Afternoon Live and AM Northwest with  Helen Raptis which one of the longest running local talk shows and winner of a 2012 Emmy. And you can watch live by going to katu.com/live next Wednesday at 3pm and Thursday at 9am (pacific time). And if you are fine tuning your capsule wardrobe or just getting started building yours for the first time, you will especially want to tune in on Thursday as I will be bringing my own capsule wardrobe for fall and walking viewers through how to curate their own. That's a lot of packing folks! I am so excited and I do hope you'll tune in.

I don't know about you (however, I have a feeling I do), but I am more than ready for the weekend. With a sweet arrival (listen to Monday's episode of the podcast to learn more), a unique culture/celestial event taking place on Monday and well, just a reason to celebrate for so many reasons, I have a feeling this weekend will be quite memorable. Wishing you a lovely and safe two (perhaps three) days. Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

-Shannon
