The idea of poise has been on my mind recently as I had the opportunity to read, and consequently then immediately recommend Jennifer L. Scott's new book Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic which was just released this past Tuesday. And while I won't go into detail here about why I devoured this book in two short days (tune in to this week's episode of the podcast as I share my review in the Petit Plaisir), I want to share a few thoughts as it awakened me to that extra element that can be easy to let go of as we go about our days.
In particular, poise is a muscle that we have to hone, tone and train, as it needs to kick in when a negative or less desirous response may be expected or even warranted. Exhibiting poise is the means by which we maintain our composure, but also exhibit a mastery of our mind, our words and our behavior
in such way that when we come home after all has been said and done, tuck ourselves into bed at night, we know we exemplified the person we know we can be. And most importantly, the person we truly are.
Exhibiting poise requires each of us to hold ourselves to a higher standard, perhaps a standard nobody else will. In fact, it might be a standard others
wish we wouldn't hold ourselves to because it makes it easier to just get by, just let go and allow life to navigate our path. But you see, I know that is not who I am, and I am almost certain that is not who you are. To live consciously is to become the conductor, the leader, rather than the passenger or the follower of our lives, and if we are going to strive in the direction where eventually our goals will be attained, we must practice poise on a daily
basis. Jennifer's book outlines how to do this in great detail which is why I highly recommend you pick up a copy.
In other news, be sure to check out this week's Thoughts from the Editor, as TSLL reader has available to them an exclusive discount on luxurious sheets sets that I personally recommend (and am currently sleeping in). As well, a recipe is shared and if you're looking for your new winter
coat, check out this week's This & That as a 40% sale is available at a quality store.
October wraps up this weekend, and that means November begins. While I am excited for the
holidays, I am savoring this autumn that has been stunningly gorgeous and plentiful with sunshine paired with just the right amount of crisp chill. I hope you have a lovely start to the eleventh month. Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.
