,
Whenever I have a schedule in which I can devote my sole attention to the blog and writing - be it the weekend or a vacation, I always enjoy stopping into my favorite patisseries, bakeries or cafes and typing away. I am one of those camper-outers as I will find a table and
chair and lose all track of time until I realize I should probably buy something else as to pay my due rent on the space I am occupying.
Why I bring this favorite pastime of mine up is because I took advantage
of my spring holiday this week on two separate days by working in one favorite haunt and one new one that I wished to explore, and when I stated at the counter as I was ordering that I would be working away at my computer, the barista offered a conciliatory sigh, as if to say, "That's too bad". I was actually shocked by this because I had forgotten that too often we as a culture associate the word "work" with something negative. I had to ask myself, why have we done
this?
Well, it only makes sense that if we have to do something we don't want to do, but realize we have to, this of course would be a drudgery. And along anyone's path, we will have to be involved with work we
don't necessarily enjoy, but it doesn't always have to be this way.
I feel beyond fortunate to have find myself regularly losing track of time as I come up with ideas, writing and exploring for simply
luxurious life projects and posts. I am not quite able to step out on my own yet, but my hope is in the future I will have that opportunity. Either way, even if we only are able to do the work we love in our off time, what a gift, no?
I hope you continue to seek out this type of work because the rewards, the sense of productivity and purpose have a magically mysterious way of filling the void that I have been known to fill with unnecessary worry, angst and unnecessary work for myself. I'm not saying it will be a utopia, but it will be pretty close as you will be better able to live in the moment, be open to what unfolds and lose the dread that many of us have when we wake up in the morning.
Waking up without the alarm clock will become more common as you wish to get the day started . . . yes, it will happen and it's an amazing feeling.
With all of that said, this week's newsletter has an extra post
for your reading and shopping pleasure. DVF began her friends and family sale this week which runs through Monday, so do be sure to see all that is available for discount (basically everything). I too took advantage earlier this week. And I'm talking technology and manners on this week's episode of The Simple Sophisticate. Dos and don'ts and how to master our cell phone, all discussed with interesting findings in some recent studies.
The spring season has officially arrived and that means more reasons to be outside whether we have to wear our wellies or sunscreen. Either way, the opportunity for change, brilliant change, is in the air. Can you feel it?
Until next week, I'll see you on the blog.
Shannon
~On a book tour note, the first book signing, as you were alerted to earlier in the week, takes place tomorrow (Saturday), and if you're curious to see how it goes, be sure to follow on Instagram (a post will follow in the weeks ahead as well). Also, the New York City book
signing (New Canaan, CT) has been updated and moved to June, so be sure to stop by the Events to find all of the details.
