One of the most fortunate states to reach in life is to feel content within the life you have created for yourself regardless of the decisions of those around you that you love. What
I mean by this is not that you disregard how those around you or those you hope to spend your life are doing, but knowing that whatever these people do, you have a life you can revel in and feel utterly secure, comfortable and thoroughly enjoy.
Such a state is quite liberating, but it is a state that doesn't just occur. It takes conscious effort, attention and discipline, but oh, how it is worth it. At the ground-level, such a life has been cultivated around your values, passions and talents. It takes time to reach this destination, but when you do, you radiate strength, quiet confidence and a tranquil energy that people gravitate towards.
This weekend, or perhaps sometime in the near future, take a moment to sit down and assess how you are doing in regards to reaching this life milestone. If you don't feel at peace when others don't behave or act as you'd prefer to fulfill your needs, ask
yourself, "What can I do to fill this need?" "What is it that I am seeking?". Perhaps it is companionship, perhaps it is validation, and while we understandably may desire the company of others, we can also do ourselves a tremendous favor by being our own best friend: speaking kindly about and to ourselves, taking care of ourselves, putting up necessary boundaries and seeking out others who respect us.
When we begin to treat ourselves well, we refrain less from seeking outside approval because we've instead realized it was our own approval all along that we needed. And when we reach this point, finding contentment with our life is much easier to achieve.
Speaking of building relationships and seeking companionship, this week's episode on the podcast discusses the many habits that can cultivate more charm, and it was a listeners' favorite. View the show notes here.
And if you were wondering what I was up to last
weekend while I trekked to Portland, have a look at this week's Thoughts from the Editor and enjoy the tour.
While this weekend will keep me at home, I must admit I am quite looking forward to
it. I have a few books that I am eager to read, tax business that needs to be tended to and a decor project that I have been patiently waiting to begin. Follow on Instagram to see what I'm up to.
