 ,

Wednesday evening I had the opportunity to listen to comedian and writer David Sedaris at Cordiner Hall at Whitman College. Nothing short of hilarious, insightful and oh-so crassly humorous about life's everyday hiccups, Sedaris spoke with his one-and-only Billie Holiday-esque voice for two hours and probably could have gone on for more.

And while he had the sold-out audience in stitches as he read his essays that have or will appear in The New Yorker and on his English radio show "Meet David Sedaris", it was a particular statement he made about how come so many adventures happen in his life thus giving him endless fodder to write about that caught my attention toward the end of the evening.

"If you say no, you don't have a story to tell. That's why I say yes. The less control you have, the more adventure you have."

It's the last part that is frightening, no? Giving up control is something I have worked so hard for when it comes to the security of my job and home, but as we know when it comes to relationships and working with other people, we can't control anyone but ourselves. So maybe he has a point. Maybe instead of pre-designating in our mind how things should unfold with people around us, maybe we should (unless we know better based on previous experiences with certain people), say yes.

I have to be honest here and reveal a little something about myself, when it comes to meeting people, I actually do say yes more often than not, and my stories are endless. Some don't make sense to most people and many will remain beautiful memories to return as a reminder that indeed, saying yes is better than saying no, but where I need to improve is to continue to say yes. Why? I get scared.

Again, it is when we make assumptions about how something will turn out or think it should turn out that we get in our own way. I will also admit, I've done that many times as well, and I kick myself afterward. So maybe the life lesson or the take away is to not only say yes initially, but keep saying yes as more of the adventure unfolds. As I type this I must again admit, I'm trembling a bit because it requires a lack of control. But I'll try, will you?

So now that you know a little bit more about me, you'll notice that in this week's newsletter there are two posts from the editor. As I share in "Letter from the Editor", I came to discover recently that something was missing during this past fall on the blog. Be sure to read and find out what and how I remedied my dilemma. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch is quite prevalent on TSLL this week - not only for the fantastic pic below, but also for his upcoming film as spotlighted in this week's This & That

One of my readers pointed out this week that while they enjoy the mix of inspiration and fashion, it is the inspiration that they love move here on the blog, and trust me, I heard her.

And last but certainly not least, an exciting announcement was just posted yesterday. Many readers have been asking since August for the book Choosing The Simply Luxurious Life to be released prior to Christmas and the New Year (rather than January 2015), and after completing necessary edits, proofs and pics, I am beyond giddy to announce that the official release date of the book is now Tuesday December 16th.

All of you who have already pre-ordered your signed copy will receive your book(s) on or before the release date, and if you haven't pre-ordered a signed copy and would like to (order here), you still have time. Place your order by Wednesday November 26th and you too will receive a signed copy on or prior to the release date.

And so with that, I am breathing a sigh of excited relief. How about we all go enjoy a weekend? ;) Have a beautiful few days off, and until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

Last weekend while I was typing away at my favorite cafe in Walla Walla, the winter weather styles of customers popping in for a hot cup of java or chocolate paired with a sweet treat entertained my stylist’s eye. And one particular trend kept repeating itself – the puffer coat. Now I’m not talking the old-school, balloon puffer coats that have no shape or structure at all. I’m talking about the puffer coats that have been en vogue for a couple of years now, especially across the pond in England that give a little shape and a tremendous amount of warmth.

So today, I wanted to come up with an outfit that involved this winter weather essential. After all, the east coast is receiving record amounts of snowfall and the frigid temperatures are being felt in all 50 states (yes, even Hawaii – crazy!), so we could all use a go-to bundle of cozy. However, simply because it’s cold doesn’t mean one has to forget about style.

If you are smitten by Cole Haan’s Felicity hobo, TSLL reader Janet brought to my attention that you can save 30% off here (thank you!). Stay warm, but always stylish.
