Recently, on one of my daily walks I came across a lot in which the developer had just begun to break ground to build a new home. After the first day of prepping the land for construction, the ground was tore up, dirty and innumerable building items as small as tools to as large as bulldozers lay haphazardly about. In the proximity of this building site were beautiful homes that were well-tended to and respectfully cared for. And I began to contemplate this idea of change.
Whenever we choose to undergo a change in our lives, we initially imagine the final outcome when everything is as we want it to be - perfectly transformed, flawlessly finished and precisely as we expected it to be. During this time of excited planning, we may gloss over or forget that in order to attain the outcome of change we seek, we must first go through times of turmoil, unrest and upheaval. Much like the construction of a new house, ground must be moved, necessary tools and scaffolding must be brought in to ensure that everything is in place, properly put-together so that when the final structure is complete, it is indeed sound and sturdy.
It is important to keep in mind that a sense of unsettledness will undoubtedly set in at the beginning, middle and just before the end of any change we seek (if it is indeed meaningful change). So long as we know this going in and keep it in mind as we move forward, the desire to stop and retreat to what once was will lessen. After all, by initiating change we are saying, the current state of things is not working and we know we can do better. In time, the new home will appear as the houses that neighbor it, just as you life will transform itself into the remodeled version you know it can be. Patience, perseverance and understanding will be the keys to your certain success.
