In one instance this week I had the opportunity to learn how to stand-up-paddle on top of the frigid temperatures of Wallowa Lake. Due to my first-hand knowledge of how cold the water is and not sure how difficult it would be to learn this new skill, I was a bit anxious.
The demonstration began with three other women in attendance - ages ranging from 65-19. None of us had ever surfed and only two of us had the somewhat relatable (in a very fourth cousin sort of way) experience with boogie boarding.
While we were all gun-ho, each one of us seemed to be certain we would make a mistake at some point and fall into the water. After all, we were novices and we had no clue what to expect. However, to the delight of each of us, standing up was much simpler than we had anticipated and even more shocking was the fact that not one person even came close to falling in the morning chilled waters of the lake. The tranquility and ease of the moment soon replaced our doubts and fears, and I was ready to become a convert and go out and buy my own board (to use on what body of water at home, I'm not quite sure; needless to say, I was a little overzealous).
Much like attempting to learn how to stand up and paddle when I've never done it before, when we don't know how exactly something will go in life, we tend to exacerbate our sense of worry, blowing completely out of proportion what might actually happen.
After all, in order to change, to grow and to evolve, we must be willing to look self-imposed fear in the face and stare it down in order to eliminate its power. The ability to do this will be most difficult the first few times, but once you can discern what self-inflicted fear looks like and invalidate the fear it creates, you will find yourself less frozen in fear and more consumed with the curiosity to try.
So today, look at situations in your life at this moment that you have purely dismissed because they are new or foreign and you aren' t sure how it will work out should you attempt it. Then evaluate whether or not if the feat was successful, if it would add value to your life. If the answer is yes, then resolve to get out of your own way and give it your best shot.
This past week I've been on vacation which has allowed me to explore, relax and enjoy fantastic company. With that said, Monday's Inspirational post, which was without a doubt the most popular post this week, was one that resonates quite profoundly in my life, and I have a feeling in so many of yours as well. To be alive is to be fortunate to be able to constantly grow, and when we are constantly growing, learning and evolving, our lives are forever richer and full of substance. Have a look at Choose to Evolve to gather ideas on ways to continually propel your life forward.
For those of you who love fashion, the September fashion issues are hitting the newsstands as we speak (Vogue US - view here) and in this week's Why Not . . . ? post I try to help each of us (novices to the fashion world and those who have loved creating their own style for as long as they can remember) navigate these hefty magazine issues and reveal what we should be looking for as we each look ahead to the fall shopping that awaits.
And lastly, in the newsletter you will find two Foodie Friday recipes that I am confident you will savor and devour (as I know I did) from how to make a berry crostata with fresh fruit found at the farmer's market stands to a dependable, yet luxurious side dish.
I hope this week's newsletter finds you well and don't forget that on September 1st you will also be receiving a bonus newsletter full of simply luxurious fall styles and trends and how to enhance your wardrobe as well as continue to be savvy when it comes to spending your hard earned money. Have a lovely weekend, and until next week, I'll see you on the blog.
