"Some think it's holding on that makes one strong; sometimes it's letting go."

I

was reminded Thursday evening of the need to relieve built up tension. It always seems to amaze me how tension builds up over time and before you know it, it feels as though a tremendous weight is pressing down on your shoulders. And admittedly in my case, much of it is a pressure of the life I have chosen to live. The perfectionist in me that refuses to stop, let go and just let certain things be, accepting that mistakes and flaws can be part of the beauty.

But then I began to view the described tension differently.

In Hatha yoga, the goal is to build tension throughout many of the poses, challenging your muscles, pushing them beyond what was once perceived to be their limits. And the balance of creating this tension is knowing you will let it go, and the release will be exhilaratingly soothing and calming all at the same time.

I truly can't imagine life without a bit of tension now and again.  I'm not saying that I necessarily enjoy it, don't get me wrong, but I think sometimes many of us are short sighted when it comes to realizing our own abilities, and it is with the tension that we realize what we are truly capable of.  The key is to maintain the balance.  With the tension, there must be a release, and the release can come in many different forms - an opportunity to vent, exercise, journaling - as long as it is healthy and productive.

So the next time you find yourself in a situation where you can feel the tension building, tweak your perspective of it, see it as an opportunity for growth and then focus on how you will release the tension when you have a moment (preferrably sooner, rather than later).  If you find that you have tension built up at the moment and are not sure why you can't let it go, have a look at Letting Go, a post that reveals the benefits of those little subconscious things we forget to set ourselves free from.

It is my hope that The Simply Luxurious Life newsletter is the latter form of the balance - a way in which you can unwind, enjoy, relax and be inspired.  This week's newsletter spotlights a talented blogger who repeatedly shares photos and images that are stunningly gorgeous. One of my favorite posts recently was this one. Marzena takes great care to produce a blog of quality and consistency, and I find myself regularly oogling over what she has discovered to share with her readers.  Do be sure to stop by after reading her thoughts on luxury. You will also find some foundational pieces for your wardrobe, as well as a review of the recently released, and much talked about (in Vanity Fair, Allure, The Daily Mail) book by Pamela Keogh Are You A Jackie Or A Marilyn?. And do shy away from checking out Gisele Bundchen's Rules of Style. While she may appear fierce on the runway and in the many fashion ad campaigns, her day-to-day style reveals many ideas and suggestions for creating your own casual, yet stylish wardrobe.

Thank you for your subscription to The Simply Luxurious Life newsletter, and until next week, I'll see you on the blog.

How do you define luxury?

It may sound a bit dreamy in the first place to say this but for me luxury is not necessarily money related and then, its definition depends highly on the moment. Of course, it can be a gorgeous pair of shoes or a beautiful garment. I wouldn't deny a minute that I love good quality and that comes often with a price.

And then, there is the question to have a certain freedom to do what you want to do which can a lot of times have something to do with money as well.

But, luxury can also be something as basic as time. An interesting conversation with an old friend that I haven't seen in ages. Slowing down and spending a perfect weekend with my boyfriend. And then, it can also be the fact that you realize your dreams even though you are running the danger to fail.

What luxuries do you enjoy in your day to day life?

The first thing that comes to my mind is something quite simple - starting the day with an excellent cup of coffee. Berlin has some great coffee shops, and I love experiencing the different ambiances and coffee types. However, a little while ago I have found a personal favorite of mine which I fall back on regularly since the quality is excellent,
and the brewing is done with a lot of expertise. In the end you really can taste the difference, and I always prefer one good cup of coffee to a dozen "venti-something to go".

The next thing on my list would be taking some time,
sitting down instead of doing everything in a hurry and letting an excellent book or magazine (currently it would be the new issue of The Gentlewoman) keep me company.

What luxuries would you like to enjoy in the future?

I would love to include more traveling into my life since I always truly enjoy the experience. In the same time, I'm very open when it comes to moving to another city. It is something that I have done a few times in my life, and every time I was very glad about the opportunity. Immersing yourself in a new culture, perfecting your language skills, adopting a new lifestyle and learning a great deal about yourself are a only a few things that I find very tempting.

But it is a true luxury to keep a certain kind of independence (financially and psychologically) in order to fulfill such dream, and I would be happy if I would have the opportunity to fulfill my dreams in the future.
